What is an altar?

Last week in our gatherings, we explored the idea of altars as a practice of gratitude. An altar is a physical artifact, often built out of materials gathered from the place where a blessing occurred, that through sacrifice translates that blessing into an act of gratitude to God. We asked the following questions to help us understand how we might choose to construct our own altars:

Where and how have I encountered some generosity?
What materials or artifacts are associated with that experience?
How could I make an altar in time or space with those materials or artifacts?
Is there any way of making this a sacrifice?

We’d love to hear about how you’re putting this into practice. (If you missed this week or want to revisit, listen to the podcast!) Use the hashtag #SBCCaltars along with your social media posts!

Check out the affordable housing wish list!

We’re excited to complete the launch of our affordable housing project in December, when our first three residents will move in to the house we helped our friends at Hope Ministries purchase earlier this year (with funds from our Christmas 2018 fund)! We want to furnish the home with items that will stay with the house as residents transition in and out. We’d love if you would consider purchasing an item or two from the Amazon Wish List we’ve created if you are able! These items can be sent to Studebaker 112, where we’ll collect them along with notes of prayer and encouragement before sending them off to the house.

How to help:
1. Click here (or copy & paste the link below) to view the list.
2. Click “add to cart” next to the item(s) you’d like to purchase.
3. Select address: “South Bend City Church’s Gift Registry Address” – or enter address “South Bend City Church, Attn: Warehouse, 635 S. Lafayette Blvd., South Bend, IN 46601”
4. Finish checking out as usual.
5. Feel free to write an encouraging note or prayer of blessing to the future residents using the gift options.

May our gratitude in this season move us toward greater generosity for our neighbors!
