Listener Map

What the map is, and what it isn’t

If groups form out of these connections we can’t take responsibility for them, or oversee them in any way. They won’t be ‘SBCC Tables’ — they will simply be groups of people who have SBCC in common. While you may wish to discuss teachings in a group, or experience other conversations or liturgies, these gatherings are entirely free to become whatever you need them to be.

How it works

When signing up for the first time, simply register your town/city, county/state and country on the map to the best of your ability (if you’re in London, enter the area of London in town/city, e.g. ‘Shoreditch’, and ‘London’ as the county). Please fill in all these fields, or the algorithms will get confused and connect you with people all over the place. Please add a profile picture and a bit of blurb about yourself, so we can feel like we’re connecting with other humans.

You can then search the map to see if there are other registered listeners nearby (you can navigate back to your profile at anytime by clicking on ‘community’ – ‘user profile’ on the menu). You can reach out to other listeners via the messaging service. During the registration process you can also opt in to receive an email when someone new registers in your area. We suggest you add our email address info@southbendcitychurch.com to your contacts, so these Listener Map emails don’t go to your junk/spam folder.

If there’s no one in your area yet, don’t worry: you can join our Discord server to connect with others that call SBCC home.

It’s secure

The pin on the map won’t reveal your exact geographic location. It’s only an approximation. And people can only contact you via our messaging service.

Your personal details are secure. We won’t publish, share or sell any of your personal details to any third parties, they will only be used on the Listener Map and for us to inform you of important updates. For more information, please see our privacy policy. When you register on the map you will receive a confirmation email, and another email asking if you’d like to subscribe to our mailing list.

It’s as safe as you make it

Our hope is that a lot of people meet through the Listener Map and many friendships and groups have form, without incident. But obviously platforms like these can be abused. So if you receive a message that leaves you feeling uncomfortable you can block the user and contact admin info@southbendcitychurch.com. Meeting up with someone you only know online also carries risks. And while Nomad cannot take responsibility for your safety, your safety is really important to us, so please read and implement our safety guidelines before meeting up with someone.

Safety Guidelines

South Bend City Church cannot take responsibility for your experience on the Listener Map, or for your safety when meeting with someone you’ve connected with through the Listener Map. Remember, anyone can register on the Listener Map, and we don’t moderate any of the interactions and connections made on the Map. Consequently, the Listener Map could potentially be abused. So we think it’s wise to take some precautions if you decide to meet up with someone offline.

  • Do a little background checking
  • Before meeting them, try to get to know the person
    • Exchange messages via the map’s messaging system or email
    • Check them out on social media and Google
    • If they have very few friends, their photos have no tags, their photos don’t include family members, friends, or everyday activities, it’s possibly a fake account
  • Be cautious about sharing personal information
    • For example, until you are sure you can trust them, don’t share your home or work address
  • If for any reason you feel uneasy, don’t meet up with them.
  • You can easily block a user, so you will no longer receive any messages from them through the Listener Map

Plan your get together

  • We strongly advise that when you meet up with someone from the Listener Map, you take someone else with you,
    • If more listeners have registered in your area then arrange to meet as a group
  • When you meet someone for the first time, meet in a neutral, public space
    • Don’t meet at their house or invite them to your house
    • Don’t accept an offer to be picked up at your house
    • Meet somewhere that you know well so you know how to get home
  • Tell other friends or family members who you are meeting, and where you are meeting
    • Set your phone to share your location with your friends or use an app like Find My Friends
  • If the meeting is not going well and you are feeling uncomfortable, make your excuses and leave politely

If in doubt, don’t meet up

  • If for any reason you feel uncomfortable, trust your instincts and don’t meet up
    • You are under no obligation to meet anyone you connect with on the Listener Map
    • You don’t have to give a reason to cancel a planned meeting

South Bend City Church cannot take responsibility for your safety. But your safety is really important to us, so please consider implementing these safety guidelines.
