Telos “ReStory” American South Pilgrimage

This November, an SBCC cohort will travel on pilgrimage to the American South. The Telos Group, our partner in these efforts, will lead us on a journey that provides us with the tools, relationships, and inspiration to wrestle with a more complete telling of the American story. With it, we can better work to heal the racial injustice, inequality, and political polarization that plague our nation today.

While itineraries may vary based on schedules and availability of partners, a typical trip includes:

    • Visits to museums and historic sites that focus on crucial aspects of our history, from slavery, to Jim Crow, to the civil rights movement.
    • Meeting with peacemakers from civil rights leaders and movement builders to nonviolence educators. We also meet with public historians, artists, and community stakeholders.
    • Participation in a Kingian Nonviolence training.
    • Discovering the impacts of racial injustice on climate, the environment, and medicine.
    • A visit with indigenous communities in coastal Louisiana, examining the effects of climate change in their community.
    • Learning about enslaved women from Alabama who endured unethical medical experiments and helped shape modern gynecology, and how racial disparities in healthcare persist today.
    • Exploring local culture through art and cuisine.
    • Sharing space and meals with locals from diverse communities.

Please note: both for logistical reasons, and to create the best conditions for our encounters on the trip, spots are limited. We’ll use the information collected here to help us discern the best cohort. We plan to continue these trips in the future, so if you’re not invited to participate this time, there may be future opportunities to join.

Dates: November 10-14, 2025

Cost: approximately $2,800-$3,500 (see below)

      • Registration with Telos covers lodging, meals/beverages/snacks (except alcohol), gratuities, museum and site admission, honoraria, and trip facilitation: $2,400 per person (double occupancy with a roommate) or $2,900 per person (single occupancy with a room to yourself)
      • Current estimates put the cost of air travel from South Bend/Chicago at approximately $400-600.
      • Those traveling from the South Bend area will travel as a group, with flights booked through SBCC to keep logistics relatively simple.
      • Those traveling from other areas are responsible for their own travel (arriving in New Orleans by midday on Nov 10, and departing Montgomery late afternoon or evening on Nov 14.)

If you’re interested, now’s the time to let us know. Our interest form has all the details – find that here. Please fill it out before July 20. We’ll extend formal invites for the cohort by early August.
